Purdue men’s basketball coach Matt Painter secures pay raise for 2026-27 season

Purdue’s Matt Painter is going into his 22nd season as the school’s men’s basketball coach.

He has had one heck of a tenure, leading the program to the NCAA Tournament 17 times. He got to the Final Four and the national title game during the 2023-24 season before losing to the UConn Huskies.

Because he has done so well at Purdue, the school is rewarding him with a raise. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Painter’s amended contract includes a salary raise to $7 million for the upcoming season. That raise is up from $5.2 million and will go up by another $50,000 each year.

He is projected to be the second-highest-paid coach in the Big Ten behind Michigan State’s Tom Izzo.

It’s a well-deserved raise. Painter, who played for the Boilermakers under legendary coach Gene Keady, has made Purdue one of the top programs in the country. He has a 501-224 overall record as Purdue’s head coach. The Boilermakers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament 17 times, including in each of the past six seasons. Painter’s teams have five regular-season Big Ten titles and three conference tournament crowns.
