Aside from Ivan Kharchenkov, Arizona basketball posted an underwhelming offensive effort in Monday’s 84-75 loss versus UCLA. Bryce James had a particularly tough night. Despite starting at guard, the son of all-time NBA great LeBron James only logged six minutes of action. He missed all three of his field goal attempts and finished with one assist in the season opener. The Wildcats showed more life on Thursday, however, and so did the 19-year-old.

Less than three minutes into a home matchup against Cal Poly, James scored the first points of his collegiate career. He knocked down a corner 3-pointer off an assist from freshman guard Caleb Holt, via the Oh No He Didn’t X account.

The 6-foot-5 talent, who redshirted in his first year at Tuscon, recorded five points on 3-of-5 shooting to go with two assists, two steals and one rebound in the Wildcats’ 104-84 win over the Mustangs. There is still obviously room for improvement following this 17-minute performance, but James made gradual progress in game number two.

Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd is trusting this young player to help set the tone, but he does not expect him to fill up the stat sheet on a consistent basis. There are several members of this team who can carry the load.

The 7-foot-2 Motiejus Krivas did so versus Cal Poly. He dropped 30 points on 10-of-13 shooting and added eight rebounds and two blocks. Holt posted 21 points, eight boards and two steals. Kharchenkov had a double-double and also tallied seven assists and four steals. The Wildcats’ core showed up against the inferior Mustangs, as they should.

Ideally, Bryce James gained confidence after seeing the ball go through the net. He was also active on the defensive end, exploiting a Cal Poly squad that committed 19 turnovers.
