The Syracuse Orange (1-0) men’s basketball is back in action tonight when the Central Connecticut Blue Devils (0-1) visit the JMA Dome. Tip-off is 7:00 and streaming on ACCNX. Here’s what our staff is watching for:
Szuba: Defense and rebounding

Syracuse came out strong defensively to start the season but the intensity waned as the game went on. So too did the rebounding margin. Central Connecticut is one of the worst offensive teams in the country, so can the Orange put the clamps down and close out stops with rebounds? Sadiq White and Gavin Doty looked good in game one, but look to see if the Orange frontcourt can get some more production from the center position against a more feeble interior with less size.
Dom: The point guard spot
Of note, Garvey Dual and Ryan Moesch essentially split time at the one in Syracuse’s season-opener. Dual played 23 minutes, while Moesch notched 17. The former had the better statline (7 points, 3/5 shooting, and the usual defense), while the latter did put up 0 points on 0/8 shooting, but lead the team in assists (five) and clearly is going to have the ball plenty coming off the bench. Monitoring where this position goes, how both guys are playing, and if this essentially 50-50 split rotation continues.
Sam: How does the back of the rotation play out?

I was surprised that Amarri Monroe only played nine minutes against New Haven on Monday. I was also surprised that Francis Folefac didn’t check into the game at all. I’d like to see GMac go to those guys – and Tasman Goodrick – a little bit more in order to have them feel out the game leading into the games where you’ll need to lean heavier on the top of the rotation next week.
Max: Defense
James already mentioned it, but after a great and intense defensive start the Orange started to fade out in their defense. I’d like to see them keep up that level they were at and force turnovers when possible. Syracuse should also look to establish themselves as the dominant force…
