TNT reportedly hires former UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis as studio analyst

TNT has reportedly hired former University of North Carolina men’s basketball coach Hubert Davis as a TV analyst, according to the Sports Business Journal.

Davis served as the Tar Heels’ head coach from 2021 to 2026, tasked with filling Roy Williams’ shoes after his retirement. Davis was from the UNC coaching tree, though, having played for Carolina from 1988 to 1992 before the New York Knicks selected him in the first round of the 1992 NBA Draft.

After a 12-year playing career, Davis retired in 2004. Three years later, he joined ESPN, working as a college basketball analyst. He held that role for five years before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Roy Williams.

About joining TNT, Davis told the SBJ that one of the most appealing things about returning to the studio side of basketball is getting to follow the sport as a whole.

“When you’re coaching a team, you’re so singularly focused on that team and the program that outside of preparing against your opponent, you just don’t really get a chance to see other programs and see what they’re doing and dive into their coaches and coaching staff and philosophies.”

Davis also spoke on the upcoming expansion of the NCAA Tournament field to 76 teams, saying, “Giving more teams, more kids, more coaches opportunities to play in this tournament is something that’s going to be fun to watch.”

UNC finished 125-54 during Davis’ tenure as head coach. He became a fan favorite in his first year, not only because he helped the team reach a 29-10 record and an NCAA Tournament berth, but also because of his impact on the school’s intense rivalry with Duke.

Davis coached the Tar Heels in the 2021-2022 season, which Blue Devil fans remember as the final year of the Mike Krzyzewski era. As fate would have it, Duke and UNC matched up for the Blue Devils’ final game in both the regular season and that year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels won both.
