At a time when spending and investment are major topics of conversation in college sports, Purdue made a statement with its extension for men’s basketball coach Matt Painter.
Per a source, Painter’s full compensation – salary, retention bonus and deferred compensation – will rise to $7 million for this season. His salary will increase by $50,000 each year through the end of the contract.

Those terms are pending board approval. Additional details, such as any change in the buyout structure for either Painter or the university, were not yet available.
Painter was scheduled to make $5.175 million this season, with a $25,000 annual increase. The extension pushes his compensation safely into the national top 10, and perhaps into the top five. (Updated salary figures for all coaches were not immediately available.)
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is scheduled to make $7.2 million this season. That ranked fourth nationally in the latest USA TODAY coaches salary database, published in April.
How much money athletic departments put into their marquee sports is a hot button topic among fan bases, now that schools can pay athlete directly. Purdue ranked near the bottom of the Big Ten in roster spending for both football and men’s basketball. Those rankings have been based on anonymity-protected surveys of coaches and front office personnel, as schools have resisted making the true numbers available.

Purdue’s athletic department professes to fully participate in revenue share. Player compensation above that number comes in the form of third-party name, image and likeness deals.
One line item it can control, however, is coach compensation. Painter’s leadership has guided Purdue to legitimate top 10 status nationally. Doing so without spending wildly on transfer talent has only enhanced his reputation.
