Phoenix must respond after a disastrous loss to Portland

This was supposed to be my first article for the Bright Side of the Sun: a literature review of ongoing discrimination issues in the National Basketball Association.

I left my proposed draft title in place even though the subject has changed. It was titled “The Answer” before Voita changed it to something more SEO appropriate. Remembering The Answer, Allen Iverson, should bring joy to all basketball fans. Pause, reflect. On to the present.

Wednesday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers changed that, as did our editor John Voita’s request for commentary on what was a disaster of an opening season for the Suns.

What was truly gut-wrenching about last night’s game was not the Suns’ loss. It could have been anticipated. Since this was the Trail Blazers’ home opener, they had several reasons to celebrate: new players and the return of Portland legend Damian Lillard.

No. What was truly disheartening and unexpected was the lack of team effort. The total unpreparedness of a Suns team that looked at times like they had never played together during preseason.

John is a lifelong Suns fan, like many of us. He also couldn’t anticipate the events of yesterday’s game. He asked in good faith whether he was alone in his assessment that yesterday’s game was very much like a crime scene.

I assert John is not alone in his assessment, and many of you may feel the same way. Please comment below to let us know what your take is on the Suns opener. Let’s also all look forward to Saturday’s home game. The most important for the Suns, in my estimation, for the coaching staff and the players in years.
