The Warriors haven’t had much luck with their first-round draft picks in recent years, dating back to 2020. James Wiseman didn’t pan out in Golden State, but the former No. 2 overall pick is getting another opportunity with the reigning NBA champions.

The New York Knicks have signed Wiseman to a non-guaranteed training camp contract. The former No. 2 overall draft pick will compete for one of the team’s remaining open regular-season roster spots.

Wiseman is a former second-overall pick who hasn’t quite panned out, averaging just 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in 152 games (56 starts) over five NBA seasons.

He appeared in a combined five games over the past two years with the Pacers after tearing his left Achilles in the 2024-25 season opener.

The University of Memphis product showed flashes of his athleticism during his time in the Bay, highlighted by a career-high 30-point performance against the Nets.

Wiseman averaged 9.9 points and 5.0 rebounds with the Warriors. Steve Kerr tried to get the most out of the big man, but ultimately, things didn’t work out in Golden State.

“We just didn’t have a sense of how raw he would be because we only had three college games of his,” Kerr stated on 95.7 The Game years ago.

In three career games at Memphis, Wiseman averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, his game has yet to translate to the next level.

Wiseman still brings a large frame to a team coming off an NBA title and can earn his keep if he plays efficiently.

With Mitchell Robinson departing for the Boston Celtics this offseason, there’s a realistic chance that Wiseman could add value to the Knicks.
