North Carolina will soon hit the court for the 2026-27 college basketball season, officially kicking off the Michael Malone era. After Malone took over as head coach back in April, he began work on the roster through the transfer portal, recruiting, and retaining players.
While there are still questions about Malone and the roster, overall it feels like a good one. Just how good? Well, ESPN dove into that last week, revealing what they believe is the floor and ceiling of each team in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

For the Tar Heels, they are projected fifth on the list, and the ceiling is 28 wins, third in the ACC, and a Sweet 16 appearance. The floor is set at 22 wins, a seventh-place finish in the ACC, and the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Here is what ESPN wrote on the Tar Heels:
Malone’s first offseason probably resembles the turbulent free agent summers he endured at the NBA level, easing the adjustment period to his first head coaching stint in college basketball in 25 years (he was an assistant at Manhattan from 1999 to 2001). He has a roster that’s built to score, a boon for a coach who guided the Nuggets to 113.5 points per clip in the playoffs during the season he won the title. Utah transfer Terrence Brown (19.9 PPG), Virginia Tech transfer Neoklis Avdalas (12.1 PPG), returnee Jarin Stevenson (11 points, five rebounds in NCAA tournament loss to VCU) and four-star freshman Maximo Adams are all capable of delivering the offensive output Malone will crave in his first season.
That seems fair considering we haven’t exactly seen what Malone can do at the college level. But overall, it feels like a lot of the national media is down on the Tar Heels this season.
A Sweet 16 in the first year of a new head coach would be a good season for the program, especially what has transpired the past few years. The program needs to get back to where it once was, and Malone is hopefully the guy who can do just that.
