YouTube Gold: Great Free Throw Distractions

In college basketball, and, to an extent, pro ball, distracting free throw shooters has become sort of an art form.

In Cameron, we’ve seen some inspired ideas. Speedo Guy was great, although then-coach Mike Krzyzewski suggested that we didn’t need to see that again (Speedo Guy, we believe, is a reverend now).

There is a pale imitation of Speedo Guy in this video, but it’s just not the same.

Perhaps the greatest idea anyone has ever had to distract free throw shooters is Arizona State’s Curtain of Distraction, which is well represented here. It’s absolutely brilliant: they have a frame with a black curtain, and they open it as the shooter prepares.

And you never know what’s going to emerge. It might be Olympian Michael Phelps, in his own Speedos, it might be a cowboy on a student in a Chick-fil-A cow costume, or it might be a clown.

It has a documented effect on shooters, and frankly, we wish it would inspire the Cameron Crazies. Noise is powerful, but so is unpredictability.

There’s also Mr. Whammy. He’s an elderly gent who curses shooters on behalf of the Brooklyn Nets. We’re not sure how effective it is, but it adds to the carnival aspect, and that’s all good.

Our understanding is that this is sort of frowned upon in Europe, and that’s too bad. It really does add a fun aspect to the game, it challenges fans and shooters, and none of that is bad.

Again, though: the challenge for Cameron is to match or exceed the Curtain of Distraction.
