Former Purdue player says farewell, seeks college basketball home after winning TRO vs NCAA

As former Purdue basketball star Trey Kaufman-Renn’s college career potentially gained new life Wednesday, he said goodbye to his Boilermaker tenure. 

In an Instagram post, the former first team All-Big Ten big man confirmed that if granted permanent eligibility, he will not return to Purdue. The post began, “Thank you, Purdue.”

“Four truly unforgettable years,” Kaufman-Renn wrote. “Grateful for my teammates, Coaches, Coach Painter, the Paint Crew, and Boiler Nation. 

“My chapter in black and gold has come to an end, but Purdue will always be part of me.” 

A Clark County Circuit Court judge Wednesday granted Kaufman-Renn’s temporary restraining order against the NCAA. It allows him to join another college program while awaiting a hearing on a preliminary injunction to play in the coming 2026-27 season.

Kaufman-Renn spent five seasons at Purdue – one redshirt season and four as either a key role player or starter. He started every game as a sophomore, paired in the frontcourt with national player of the year Zach Edey on a team which reached the national championship game.

He was an honorable mention All-American as a junior, averaging 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds. He averaged 14.2 points and a career-high 8.3 rebounds last season while helping lead Purdue to a third consecutive Elite Eight appearance.

Kaufman-Renn said Tuesday “six or seven” teams have expressed interest in him playing for them this season. The income those teams have floated led him to pursue the possibility of returning for a sixth season.

At the time, he said he had spoken with Purdue coach Matt Painter “as a friend” but had not had discussions about returning.
