Former Purdue basketball player wins TRO in NCAA eligibility case. What it means

Former Purdue men’s basketball star Trey Kaufman-Renn can, for now, pursue returning for a sixth season of college basketball.

Clark County Circuit Court No. 6 Judge Kyle P. Williams on Wednesday granted Kaufman-Renn’s motion for a temporary restraining order against the NCAA. Per the ruling, the NCAA cannot deny Kaufman-Renn eligibility based on his five years in college and four years playing for the Boilermakers, or his professional status.

Similarly, the NCAA must allow a member school to recruit, admit, enroll and allow Kaufman-Renn to participate with the basketball team and receive any associated benefits.

A separate hearing will be held on Kaufman-Renn’s motion for a preliminary injunction − a more long-term order with more lasting consequence on whether he will actually play college basketball in 2026-27. That hearing has not yet been scheduled.

Also per the ruling, Kaufman-Renn cannot sign a professional contract or receive income from a professional basketball team. The Minnesota Timberwolves selected the former first team All-Big Ten big man with the 59th overall pick in June’s NBA Draft, but he has not signed a contract.

Kaufman-Renn said Tuesday “six or seven” college coaches had reached out to him or his representatives about playing this season. He confirmed in a Wednesday post on Instagram he will not play for Purdue.

Judge Williams hinted during Tuesday’s hearing at this potential outcome. He cited last week’s granting of a TRO in Monroe County which made Indiana football players Stephen Daley and Kellen Wyatt eligible to play ahead of Friday’s hearing on a preliminary injunction.
