Chino Hills wasn’t really known as a high school basketball powerhouse until the Ball family entered the picture. Led by Lonzo Ball and featuring his two younger brothers, LiAngelo and LaMelo, the Huskies turned high school basketball into a generation-defining thing.
It wasn’t as if the Big Baller System in Chino Hill was just all flash; they also had pedigree. In 2016, the program finished 35-0, defeating more prestigious programs like Montverde Academy, Mater Dei, and Bishop Montgomery, in what many fans still call the greatest season in HS basketball history.

The team’s playing style was fast-paced and frankly unconventional. It wasn’t the kind of basketball normally taught to kids, but it was a system that worked. Many have tried to replicate them, but never had the Ball Brothers and future NBA center Onyeka Okongwu.
There has always been a debate about whether the system could truly work if implemented at a higher level, such as in college. However, Lonzo strongly believes it could, given how potent their system was.
“We talk about this all the time, and we came to the conclusion that it can be done, but it’s going to tap out after college,”he said.

“In college and definitely in high school, you can kind of f—k some s—t up, like it’s chaos,” Zo added.
Chino Hills against everyone
The talent gap between high school and college is definitely significant, but Zo’s argument relies mostly on the environment and the system of play. He believes that if college teams played their Chino Hills team in a seven-game series under high school basketball rules, there is no doubt they would reign victorious.

“I’m thinking if you take the best teams ever, put them all together in the series, and you set the rules how they supposed to be in high school, and we set that, I don’t know if anybody’s playing to our capabilities for like a seven-game series, for instance,” Ball shared.
