The future is now for Marcus Spears Jr. As reported by USA TODAY Sports and many others, the number one prospect in the class of 2027 has accelerated his timeline to play college basketball next season. In addition, Spears Jr. has committed to play for Texas.
It’s a major development for a five-star talent who was expected to take the college basketball world by storm two seasons from now, but will arrive on campus a year early.

The six-foot-nine power forward has dominated the Texas and national high school basketball circuit, averaging over 20 points and eight rebounds in Nike EYBL this spring.
Spears Jr. received interest from basketball powerhouses like Kentucky, Arizona and North Carolina, but decided to stay in his home state.
“Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I am excited to be part of it,” Spears told ESPN. “The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship.”
Spears Jr.’s sister, Cari, plays volleyball for the University of Texas.

Spears Jr. is the son of current ESPN NFL analyst and former NFL player Marcus Spears. The elder Spears played his college football at LSU, and the Tigers were also said to be a finalist for Spears Jr. in his basketball recruitment.
