JP Estrella decides to stay with Michigan basketball

When Michigan basketball won the national championship, there were high expectations for the ensuing season. However, much of that had been thrown into disarray with head coach Dusty May’s departure for the NBA.

The first piece that the Wolverines had added via the transfer portal was a player that the maize and blue had seen in the NCAA Tournament, in Tennessee forward-center JP Estrella, who pledged to Michigan basketball shortly after the portal had opened. Given May’s usage of big men, Estrella certainly thought he would thrive in the Wolverines’ system, but with an interim coach in Mike Boynton Jr., Estrella apparently needed some time to figure out his future.

This weekend, he ultimately decided his best recourse is to remain in Ann Arbor and continue playing for the Wolverines, as he is revealed to be staying in Ann Arbor.

As noted, Estrella averaged 10 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. His final game with the Vols was against his newfound team, but he struggled against the Michigan defense. He finished with seven points in 25 minutes with seven rebounds.

This past season was his sophomore year, and he will now begin his junior year in Ann Arbor with the Wolverines.
