Michigan Basketball is set to face the Duke Blue Devils on Dec. 21 at Madison Square Garden, setting the stage for what’s sure to be one of the more high-profile matchups early in the 2026-27 season.
The two teams met last season in Washington, D.C., where Michigan came up just short in a back-and-forth game that stayed tight into the final minutes. It also extended a brutal trend, as Michigan hasn’t beaten Duke since 2008 and has dropped its last four against the Blue Devils.

The all-time numbers lean heavily toward Duke as well, with Michigan holding just eight wins in 31 total meetings. The only previous matchup between the two at Madison Square Garden came back in 2008, when the Wolverines fell in the 2K Sports Classic title game.
Michigan, however, has been comfortable in New York over the years. The program has a strong overall record at Madison Square Garden, along with multiple postseason appearances and a Big Ten Tournament run that ended in a title in 2018.
This matchup is also part of a larger non-conference push that will draw national attention. Duke is slated to play both UConn and Gonzaga at neutral sites as well next season, with the Michigan game included in a package that will be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
Details like tip-off time and broadcast specifics are still to be announced. For Michigan, it’s another early opportunity against a top-tier opponent, this time at one of the most famous sports venues in the world.
