With the Iowa State basketball program looking to the transfer portal and the offseason to improve after losing in the Sweet 16 this past season, it was still another impressive season in the books, led by head coach T.J. Otzelberger. Despite the heartbreaking Sweet 16 loss by the Iowa State basketball team to Tennessee, there is something to celebrate for fans as Otzelberger has been locked up in a new big contract extension.

The school has announced that the Cyclones have signed Otzelberger to a 10-year contract extension, where will be paid $6 million annually. Having taken the team to its third Sweet 16 in the last five seasons, athletic director Jamie Pollard spoke on the decision for the extension.

“Coach Otzelberger has elevated our men’s basketball program into a perennial NCAA Tournament and Top 25 team. This contract extension demonstrates Iowa State University’s commitment to him by making him one of the highest-paid basketball coaches in the country,” Pollard said, via the school’s website. “We are excited to reward him for the success we have enjoyed during his first five years leading the Cyclones, and we look forward to continued success under his leadership.”

Otzelberger has been with the Iowa State basketball program since the 2021-22 season, where in each of the seasons he’s been the head coach, the team has had a winning record and been to the national tournament. Also winning a Big 12 conference championship in the 2o23-24 season, he would speak on getting the extension.
