Talented point guard Alex Wilkins met with Mark Pope and plans to visit Kentucky

As Kentucky Basketball continues to rebuild its roster, Furman transfer Alex Wilkins is becoming a major target for Mark Pope.

According to KSR’s Jacob Polacheck, Pope met with Wilkins over the weekend in South Carolina. The standout point guard is now looking to visit Kentucky sometime later this week.

The 6-5, 175-pound Wilkins averaged 17.8 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game this past season as a true freshman for the Paladins. He shot 32.8% from 3-point range on 5.7 attempts per outing but did hit 15 of his final 30 attempts, so he showed signs of becoming a knockdown shooter.

Against UConn in the NCAA Tournament Round of 64, Wilkins racked up 21 points on 8/15 shooting (4/8 from 3-point range) with four assists vs. four turnovers. He’s currently ranked 28th overall in the transfer portal by On3 and 42nd overall by 247 Sports.

This recruitment is part of an interesting theme that’s emerged early in the portal season for Kentucky: Landing multiple point guards.

At first, Kentucky kicked the tires on the idea of Dedan Thomas and Zoom Diallo playing together. With Thomas now headed to Houston, Kentucky has pitched the idea of Diallo and Rob Wright playing together.

Now with Wright visiting Lexington and Diallo’s status unknown, perhaps Kentucky is looking at Wright and Wilkins potentially sharing a backcourt. Or maybe Wilkins could be who Kentucky will focus on next if Wright and Diallo fall through.

Either way, Kentucky is clearly keeping its options open when it comes to next season’s backcourt.
