Clemson targeting MAAC breakout forward in transfer portal

The Clemson name is back on the radar after being linked to a forward from the MAAC conference.

Quinnipiac forward Grant Randall, a 6-foot-9 sophomore who kind of came out of nowhere this year, is hearing from a bunch of schools, including Clemson, per Dylan Thayer. And when you look at the numbers, you get why.

This is a case of “wait, where did this come from?” leaps. He was essentially a non-factor as a freshman, scoring just 62 points and grabbing 62 rebounds. He then becomes a true man this year. 45.7 percent from the field, 6.6 rebounds, 11.4 points, and more than 30 minutes per night. That’s someone you really need to prepare for; it’s no longer just a role player stat line.

In terms of dunks and offensive rating, he led the MAAC, which essentially indicates that he is aware of who he is. He’s not stealing things; instead, he’s finishing and playing around the rim. However, when you look up, you see that he also made 40 threes at a 32 percent shooting percentage, so you are now at least considering him. It becomes interesting at that point.

Losing Jake Wahlin changes things. That’s not just “oh we’ll figure it out,” that’s actual frontcourt production gone for next year’s team. So now you’re trying to find someone who can step into real minutes. Randall feels like that middle-ground guy. Not a sure thing, not some portal star everyone is fighting over, but the kind of player who ends up mattering by February.

But let’s not do the thing where we talk ourselves into him as a guaranteed hit, because he’s not that. The shooting is fine, not great. He’s not creating for anyone else. And there’s always that question with MAAC-to-ACC jumps: like, yeah, it looks good on paper, but what happens when you’re going against bigger, faster dudes every night?

Still, this player is the exact archetype Clemson should be swinging at. Long, productive, trending up, the kind of guy who might start as a rotation piece, and then you look up in January, and…
