Nebraska men’s basketball triumphs in high-scoring shootout over Oklahoma

Nebraska men’s basketball (4-0) faced its first big challenge of the season on Saturday night, taking on the Oklahoma Sooners (2-2). After entering the locker room down by seven, the Huskers stormed back in the second half, taking down the Sooners 105-99.

Both teams shot well in all areas, combining for 67 made baskets, 29 three-pointers, and 41 successful free throws. But Nebraska managed to edge out Oklahoma in each category, finishing 34-of-59 from the floor, 15-of-27 from beyond the arc, and 22-of-28 from the foul line.

The Huskers especially found paydirt in the second half after ending the first trailing 51-44. Nebraska, in fact, trailed the entire first half and didn’t take the lead until partway through the second. The Huskers tallied 61 points in the second half, shooting 18-of-28, 9-of-14, and 16-of-20, respectively.

Pryce Sandfort put together a career night to lead Nebraska to a win. The Iowa Hawkeyes transfer scored a career-high 28 points after shooting 10-of-18 from the floor, 4-of-9 from three-point range, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Sandfort also earned a career-high seven assists.

Rienk Mast also cracked 20 points on the night, tallying 26 after going 9-of-16, 5-of-7, and 3-of-4, respectively. Mast also co-led the Huskers in rebounds, hauling in six. Cale Jacobsen also grabbed six rebounds and finished with 10 points after shooting 3-of-3 from the floor, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, and 3-of-6 from the free throw line.

Berke Büyüktuncel matched his career high in scoring, racking up 16 points after going 5-of-7, 1-of-1, and 5-of-6, respectively. Jamarques Lawrence rounded out Nebraska’s double-digit scorers, earning 14 points by shooting 5-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 1-of-2 from the free throw line.

Nebraska remains on the road for its next two games, heading down to Kansas City to compete in the Hall of Fame Classic next week. The Huskers start the tournament against New Mexico on Thursday night….
