Matt Painter pinpointed exactly where his No. 24 Purdue Boilermakers lost the 83-80 double-overtime game against the unranked Valparaiso Beacons on Friday in West Lafayette. Justus McNair won the game for Valparaiso with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, but there was one moment when Purdue could have won.
In his post-game conference, Painter revealed the painful moment came at the end of first overtime, when Purdue failed to secure a defensive rebound after intentionally fouling Chaney. After that, the Beacons guard hit a buzzer-beating shot from deep, sending the game into second overtime. Painter said the Boilermakers should have fouled Chaney instead of letting him take that 3-point shot.

He went and got the ball; he had the wherewithal to get behind the line and obviously make that shot. So yeah, it was not something that we discussed, right? We were gonna foul. We weren’t gonna let them make that three.”
After taking a 70-67 lead with 6.8 seconds remaining in the first overtime, the Boilermakers intentionally fouled Rakim Chaney. After Chaney missed the free throw, the Boilermakers should have hustled for the rebound. But even after that, the next best option would have been to foul Chaney. But the Boilermakers failed to seize the moment as Chaney paved the way for the Beacons to win in second overtime.

Just before time expired, McNair shot from deep and nailed the basket for the buzzer-beating 83-80 finish. For the Beacons, Rakim Chaney had a spectacular outing, finishing with 35 points, eight rebounds and…
