3 observations from Indiana women’s basketball’s 96-55 win over Southern Illinois

Indiana women’s basketball is 2-0 on the season following Friday night’s 96-55 win over Southern Illinois at Assembly Hall in Bloomington.

It was another all-around effort from the Hoosiers, which is to be expected from a Teri Moren program. This is a new team with new pieces and things seem to be gelling fairly well here in the early going. Granted, the Salukis didn’t pose that much of a challenge, but Indiana didn’t let an easy win become difficult.

Here’s a few observations from the matchup:

Defense leads the way

This sounds odd for a game Indiana scored 96 in, but the defensive effort as as if not more impressive.

You aren’t getting on the court if you aren’t bringing the defense heat and these Hoosiers limited the Salukis to 33.8% shooting from the field and 35.3% from 3-point range. On top of that, Indiana completely dominated the rebounding battle with a 51-27 advantage on the boards.

Indiana didn’t settle for just getting it done on one end, maintaining intensity throughout the matchup. Southern Illinois’ scored its least points in the fourth quarter out of every period of the game.

This is something we’d noted against Florida Gulf Coast last week. Moren hasn’t gone especially deep into her bench during her time at Indiana, but this year’s circumstances are special.

Indiana has a few viable bench scoring options in the form of its talented freshman class. All of Addy Nyemchek, Ashlinn James and Gigi Battle saw their fair share of minutes against the Salukis and made the most of them, with Nyemchek scoring in the double figures. Jess Petrie, a transfer from Nebraska, has also shown her scoring prowess here early.

Of Indiana’s 96 points, 41 came from the bench. Moren just hasn’t had that production before and I’m curious to see how deep it goes into the season.

Depth, just in general

Again, nobody rose up as the team’s No. 1 scorer. Instead, Indiana kept the ball moving with six different Hoosiers scoring in the…
