SOUTH ORANGE – The alarm bells were blaring in Walsh Gym Thursday night.
In a performance that contained echoes of a shocking last-second loss to Fordham here two seasons ago, the Pirates survived LIU 67-60 before a vocal crowd of 1,300, which was so relieved it gave home team a standing ovation at the final buzzer.

LIU, which dropped its opener at Florida Atlantic by 14 points, won the Northeast Conference last season and was the runaway preseason pick to do so again.
Fifth-year guard Roddie Anderson carried the offense for Seton Hall (2-0), scoring 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-7 from deep. The Xavier transfer seemed like the only Pirate who attacked LIU’s zone defense with confidence.

Fifth-year forward Elijah Fisher added 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals as the Hall shot just 40 percent from the field – including 6-of-21 from 3-point range – and committed 16 turnovers.

FIVE TAKEAWAYS
1. A disaster at point guard
For the third straight game, including the exhibition squeaker at Monmouth, the Pirates looked lost at the most important position. Starter Del Jones and backup Trey Parker were loose with the ball and shot poorly. Neither showed any aptitude for attacking LIU’s zone, finding an open man or pushing the ball.
The one guy who showed some playmaking skills in the season-opening win against Saint Peter’s, Illinois transfer Mihailo Petrovic, barely played.

2. Tempo too slow
The Pirate are crawling, and ith not working for this personnel.
It is hard to apply full-court pressure when you’re not making shots, and that includes free throws, at a high enough rate. But a group that is struggling to execute in the half court should be looking to push the ball more than these Pirates are – especially when legs are fresh because Holloway uses such a deep bench.

3. A problem…
