3 things to watch for Indiana women’s basketball vs Southern Illinois

Indiana women’s basketball is set for its second matchup of the season, welcoming Southern Illinois to Assembly Hall on Friday evening.

The Hoosiers played an all-around effort against Florida Gulf Coast to open the season on Tuesday with strong play on the glass leading to plenty of extra possessions. They also kept the ball moving on offense, with no dominant go-to scorer emerging.

Does Teri Moren keep going deep in the bench?

Teri Moren hasn’t reached too far into her bench in over a decade leading the program. Yet 13 different Hoosiers saw the floor on Tuesday, with just three playing those crunch time minutes in a blowout.

Was that a one-off against an overmatched opponent or the sign of a new trend? The Hoosiers’ starting five is largely composed of returning contributors and transfer additions with just one freshmen, Addy Nyemcheck, earning a spot. But the program welcomed a talented freshman class and figures to add another in 2027.

It’ll be worth keeping extra tabs on lineups in this one. Players like Jess Petrie and Alisa Williams have earned minutes elsewhere but Ashlinn James and GiGi Battle are new to college but bring additional talent to the lineup that could prove too valuable to leave on the bench.

Does a No. 1 scorer emerge?

Indiana is a program known for spreading the ball around but it hasn’t been without its more dominant scorers. Mackenzie Holmes was the go-to option for the Hoosiers for the vast majority of her career and Shay Ciezki filled that role last year.

Nobody rose over the rest on Tuesday, with Zania Socka-Nguemen leading scoring with a pretty modest 13 points. Does she go for more and assert herself in that role or does Indiana lean more on a spread out offense to become more difficult to account for?
