Iowa basketball tops Lipscomb: Takeaways from season-opening win

It wasn’t always pretty, but the Iowa basketball team opened its 2026-27 season with a win inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes took down the visiting Lipscomb Bisons, 76-54, to open the new season 1-0. They only shot 24% from the 3-point line and didn’t have a starter reach double figures. Coon also added six rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. He looked like he belonged on both ends of the court. At 6-foot-6, he used his length to be a defensive pest. He hit the glass hard and showed his athleticism with a few impressive dunks.

The depth is a strength

Iowa’s bench scored 42 of the team’s 76 points in the win, accounting for over 50% of the total output. Coon was a big part of that, but he wasn’t the only depth player to show up. Second-year big man Trevin Jirak was great. He had six points, seven rebounds, and four assists in 21…
