Arizona entered the 2026-27 college basketball season ranked No. 5 nationally and carrying expectations of another deep NCAA Tournament run. The Wildcats immediately encountered adversity.

No. 22 UCLA defeated Arizona 84-75 Monday night in Las Vegas, handing the Wildcats their first season-opening loss in 20 years. The result was particularly surprising because Arizona received a spectacular individual performance from Ivan Kharchenkov.

He scored 38 points and collected 10 rebounds. But the rest of the Wildcats struggled to generate consistent offense.

Kharchenkov could not carry Arizona alone

Kharchenkov delivered one of the most impressive individual performances of opening night. He repeatedly created scoring opportunities and helped Arizona recover from a significant deficit.

Derek Dixon added 18 points, including 16 after halftime. But Arizona’s remaining players combined to make only five field goals.

That imbalance made the Wildcats easier to defend. UCLA could concentrate additional attention on Arizona’s primary scoring options without consistently paying the price elsewhere.

UCLA won the possession battle

The Bruins shot only 38% from the field, but their rebounding made a significant difference. UCLA collected 16 offensive rebounds, producing 19 second-chance points.

Those extra opportunities helped the Bruins maintain control despite stretches of inconsistent shooting. Trent Perry led UCLA with 21 points and made all 11 of his free-throw attempts.

Arizona trailed by as many as 16 points before rallying late.

The Wildcats cut the deficit to 71-70 with slightly more than three minutes remaining. But UCLA responded and finished the game with the stronger execution.
