Indiana Opens Against Eastern Illinois With a Chance to Establish It’s Identity

Indiana basketball begins its 2026–27 season Monday with an opportunity to turn preseason promise into a productive opening night.

The Hoosiers host Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. ET at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, with streaming coverage on B1G+. For second-year head coach Darian DeVries, the matchup provides the first regular-season look at how his rebuilt team handles expectations, execution and the energy of its home crowd.

Indiana enters after winning all three exhibitions, beating Butler 96–68, North Carolina 76–58 and Western Kentucky 79–74. Those results offer encouragement, although Monday begins a different evaluation. Exhibition victories can build confidence; regular-season possessions begin establishing the habits that will determine whether that confidence lasts.

The most interesting offensive question is how quickly Indiana can connect its perimeter play with its interior size. Notre Dame transfer Markus Burton joins a roster featuring guards Bryce Lindsay, Darren Harris and Jaeden Mustaf. Inside, the Hoosiers have 7-foot-2 center Samet Yigitoglu and 7-foot forward Aiden Sherrell. That personnel gives Indiana several potential ways to create favorable matchups.

The priority should be making those pieces work together. Early paint touches can force defenders to help, opening passing lanes and creating cleaner perimeter opportunities. Ball movement will matter more than simply getting shots up quickly. Indiana should look to establish a pace that produces advantages without turning the opener into a sequence of rushed decisions.

Burton’s decision-making will be particularly interesting. The Hoosiers need their guards to recognize when to attack, when to involve the frontcourt and when to reset. An opening-night crowd can encourage players to chase spectacular moments, but consistent reads would provide a stronger foundation.
