A season opener is supposed to be about the possibilities of a new team. Gonzaga and Purdue will have an extra layer to consider Monday: the Boilermakers have beaten the Bulldogs in all five previous meetings.

Purdue’s official preview describes it as the program’s toughest season-opening assignment in more than 30 years.

Gonzaga enters ranked No. 15 in the preseason AP poll and is preparing for its 26th consecutive season appearing in the poll. That kind of sustained standing gives the Zags a familiar profile: a program expected to compete nationally, even as each season brings a new group and new questions.

Monday’s game is a rare opener with a postseason feel. The teams meet at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and the winner will leave with more than a 1-0 record.
