Sean Miller’s non-conference guarantee comes with fine print

Rodney Terry’s last game as the Texas Longhorns head coach was in Dayton, and the coach on the other bench was Sean Miller. It was March 19, 2025, both teams were in the First Four, and Xavier won 86–80. Five days later, Texas hired the man who beat it.

On Selection Sunday, committee chair Bubba Cunningham had put both programs in the same sentence. Texas and Xavier, he said, were among the teams that got in “right at the very, very end.” Asked about the Longhorns’ non-conference schedule, he laid out the trade-off — teams that don’t schedule hard outside the league “have to rely on an incredible conference season.” That year, it worked for Texas. Barely.

A year later, Miller’s first Texas team took the same road. It went to Dayton as an 11 seed, beat NC State, BYU and Gonzaga, and lost to Purdue, 79–77, in the Sweet 16 on a Trey Kaufman-Renn tip-in. Two coaches, two very different Marches, and the same First Four start.

So when CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander pressed Miller this summer about a 2026–27 slate with eight buy games, Miller didn’t hedge. “The reason that we’re playing the schedule that we’re playing is I will not lose a seed line playing that schedule,” he said on the Eye On College Basketball podcast in July. “That’s one thing that I will guarantee you.”

Then came the fine print: “If we are a good team, the seed we’re supposed to get will be there.”

That sentence is the whole bet. Miller is promising that the schedule won’t punish a good team. Whether Texas becomes one is the part nobody can schedule.

The word he keeps coming back to

Miller’s defense started with a word he has used for more than a decade. “Balance to me is really important,” he told Norlander, describing the challenge of building a program and a team.

He said the same thing at Arizona’s media day in 2012, talking about the risk of booking games three or four years out without knowing who would still be on the roster. “I guess the word I am after is balance,” he said…
