Auburn basketball ends preseason schedule with 80-68 win over Samford

Auburn basketball concluded its exhibition schedule with an 80-68 win over Samford at Neville Arena Thursday night. The Tigers ended their preseason slate at 1-2, with previous losses to Florida State and Alabama.

In this game, the Auburn backcourt carried the day. Kevin Overton led Auburn with 25 points, and Tahaad Pettiford scored 20. That is a combined 45 points for the duo. Together, they shot the basketball well, going 18-for-31 from the field. Overton was good from beyond the three-point line, going 5-for-10, and he also hauled in eight rebounds.

Kolby King scored four points in his Auburn debut, and George Kimble III also added four points. Caleb Williams was third in scoring in the win over Samford with 14 points. The freshman is going to be a key player for this team this year, with Mantas Rubštavičius not a part of the team. Williams will likely now be the starter at the wing position.

For the Auburn front court, they did not score a lot of points, but they did have an impact on the boards. Troy transfer Thomas Dowd had seven rebounds to go with his three points. Centers Bukky Oboye and Narcisse Ngoy both combined for seven points and seven rebounds. Forward Adam Olsen scored just three points on 1-for-6 shooting.

As a team, Auburn shot 48% on 31-64 from the field and was 41% from beyond the three-point line. Auburn controlled the game in rebounding with a 44-27 advantage. Both teams were even in the paint, scoring 30 points each. Samford shot 43% but struggled from long range at 30%. Guard Cooper Noard led the Bulldogs with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Auburn will now turn its attention to the regular season. The Tigers will host Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Neville Arena at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
