MIAMI, Fla. – In less than a week, the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes will travel to Tampa (Fla.) and tip off the 2026-27 college basketball season against the No. 1 Florida Gators, thus beginning Shelton Henderson’s sophomore campaign to stardom.
Last year, as a freshman, the 19-year-old had veterans such as Ernest Udeh Jr., Tre Donaldson, and Malik Reneau to learn from about what it takes to be a leader and impact winning. As Henderson’s role increases, so does the expectation. Head coach Jai Lucas alluded to having an internal standard for him this upcoming season.
Henderson averaged 13.8 points on 56.7 percent shooting, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals in 35 games (all starts). He is projected to surpass last season’s production and lead the Hurricanes to new heights.

According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Lucas plans to assign Henderson more on-ball responsibilities in “spurts” throughout the season. Although Villanova transfer Acaden Lewis will be the Hurricanes’ leading facilitator, the former five-star recruit will reportedly have opportunities to emerge as a versatile offensive generator.
Henderson’s freshman campaign consists of him being able to score aggressively in the paint. He has the athleticism, plus a 6-6 and 239-pound frame to be a force going to the rim. However, where Henderson needs to improve the most is perimeter shooting. Last season, he made 25.5 percent of shots from behind the arc. Henderson took on the task at hand during the summer and looks to be an all-three-level efficient scorer.
The Hurricanes haven’t landed many five-star recruits, only five since 2000, including freshman Caleb Gaskins as the latest. Henderson initially committed to Duke when Lucas was an assistant coach, then followed him to Coral Gables upon taking the head-coaching job. Given how rare the occasion has been for the program, he has an opportunity to leave a bigger legacy.
