Kentucky opens the 2026-27 men’s basketball season at No. 23 in the AP Top 25. The ranking carries an unusual bit of history: the Wildcats have now appeared in the weekly AP poll 998 times, more than any other program. If they remain ranked for the next two polls, they will become the first team to reach 1,000 appearances.

That is a measure of consistency across generations, not a prediction for this season. A poll appearance means Kentucky was ranked in a particular weekly edition; it does not mean the Wildcats won a game or a championship. But staying in the national conversation that many times requires a program to keep producing teams voters believe belong among the country’s best.

Kentucky’s current ranking is enough to keep the count moving. The AP report noted the 998th appearance and said two more weeks would put the Wildcats at 1,000. The careful distinction is that Kentucky needs to remain in the poll for those appearances to count.

The Wildcats also enter a season with a demanding schedule. Kentucky’s athletics department lists nine opponents ranked ahead of it in the preseason AP and coaches polls, including Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and Louisville. That gives the team plenty of chances to make a statement, but also plenty of opportunities to test its place in the rankings.
