Ben Simmons’ first NBA season with the Kings is over before it even started.
The veteran guard, whom Sacramento signed in free agency this summer on a one-year, $3.5 million contract, suffered a torn right Achilles in practice on Sunday, the team announced after ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the news.

The 30-year-old Simmons, who did not play last season, was set to make his return to the league with Sacramento for the 2026-27 season, but he now will have to wait another year before potentially taking an NBA floor again.
Selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Simmons went on to have a roller coaster of an NBA career throughout his first nine seasons in the league before stepping away last season.
Between injuries and inconsistencies in his game, Simmons never truly lived up to his full potential, despite winning Rookie of the Year in the 2017-18 season and making two All-Star and All-Defensive Teams.
In two preseason appearances with Sacramento, Simmons averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.
