FIRST LOOK: Clemson unveils new men’s basketball practice facility

Ten years after Clemson spent $63.5 million rebuilding Littlejohn Coliseum, the men’s basketball program finally has a practice court it does not have to share. Grayson Mann posted an eight-second look inside Brown Family Pavilion on Monday, showing Clemson’s players getting shots up in their new home.

The short video only reveals one section of the building, but Clemson did not go subtle. A polished court is surrounded by purple and orange padding, while oversized images of former Tigers line the wall above the basket. “STAND STRONG” sits in the middle of the display, watching over practice like a very large and very on-brand motivational post-it note.

The $40 million price tag covers much more than the hardwood shown in the video. Clemson’s full project includes about 30,000 square feet of new construction and renovations to more than 51,000 square feet of existing space around Littlejohn Coliseum and Swann Pavilion. The Brown Family Pavilion houses the men’s practice gym, team areas, and coaches’ offices, while the women’s program is receiving upgrades to its practice gym, offices, and recruiting spaces. Clemson also expanded the strength and conditioning, nutrition, and sports medicine areas shared by both programs.

The interesting part is why Clemson needed another court so soon after Littlejohn’s previous renovation. Swann Pavilion opened in 2016 with one designated practice gym used by both basketball programs, while the main floor inside Littlejohn also had to accommodate games, gymnastics meets, and other university events. Clemson’s own planning documents said the existing shared spaces lacked the capacity to handle everyone using the building. A $40 million solution to a scheduling headache sounds excessive until two Division I basketball teams are trying to practice while another event takes over the arena.
