Pat Kelsey calls out NCAA ‘chaos’ in Seth Trimble eligibility court hearing

Louisville basketball coach Pat Kelsey testified in court on Wednesday, Oct. 14, calling for the NCAA to “end the chaos” regarding an eligibility lawsuit involving Seth Trimble and LJ Wells, two current members of the Cardinals’ roster.

Judge Brian Edwards issued a temporary restraining order in August that allows Trimble and Wells, transfers from North Carolina and Northern Kentucky, respectively, to play in 2026-27. However, his order was dissolved by a panel of judges from the Kentucky Court of Appeals on Oct. 2, resulting in eligibility limbo for Trimble and Wells with only a few weeks before the season opener.

Kelsey called for “guardrails” to NCAA rules at the hearing.

“We didn’t know whether these players were gonna be eligible,” Kelsey said. “Now, all of a sudden, it became where there was a chance fifth-year guys were gonna be eligible. So, we started recruiting those guys in the portal. To be honest with you, from a coach’s standpoint, every time the NCAA says something, we all shrug our shoulders and go, ‘is that gonna stand up? Is that a rule?’ We don’t think there are rules right now. We don’t. We don’t. That’s why we want guardrails. We want congress to act.

“We want the chaos to end, because nobody knows what the crap is going on. When somebody says, ‘did you know this was going on?’ No, I didn’t. But all of a sudden, fifth year guys are starting to get eligible. We start recruiting these guys. (Lawsuits) are the only way guys can get eligible, because you guys (referencing the NCAA) aren’t gonna end the chaos and just let that class be eligible. The only chance they’ve got is to file lawsuits.”

Trimble and Wells were originally given eligibility as part of a temporary restraining order than named more than 30 other athletes in Kentucky, including multiple Louisville and Kentucky football players.
