The first preseason exhibition for the Auburn Tigers is behind them.
Auburn fell to Florida State, 82-71, on Wednesday at Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham, part of the Ballin’ in Boutwell event.
Auburn head coach Steven Pearl hoped to play most of his roster on Wednesday, but Auburn’s rotation was limited to only 10 players. Kolby King and Owen Freeman were injured, and international signee Mantas Rubštavičius was not cleared by the NCAA before the game, forcing him to miss the game.

Still, Pearl got a quality game out of the players he could use. Returners Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton scored 30 of Auburn’s 71 points by connecting on nine shots, including six from three-point territory. The duo was also 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. South Alabama transfer Adam Olsen was Auburn’s third-leading scorer with 11 points on 50% shooting, while Santa Clara transfer Bukky Oboye led the team in rebounds with eight. Vanderbilt transfer George Kimbel III made a statement in the first half, scoring six points, hauling in six rebounds, and recording six assists.
Neither team got into an offensive rhythm on Wednesday. Auburn outshot Florida State, 34% to 33%, and neither team shot over 33% from beyond the arc. However, FSU was significantly better at the free-throw line and on the boards. The Seminoles made 85% of their free throws (34-of-40), compared to Auburn’s 71% (10-of-14). Florida State topped the Tigers in rebounding, 51-40, with the largest gap being on defense. FSU grabbed 34 boards compared to Auburn’s 26.
Auburn got solid production from their bench, which could become a factor later in the season. Olsen led all bench players with 11 points, followed by Kimble and Ngoy with six points. Samuel Walker and Blake Muschalek each scored three points in the loss.
