Leipold has consistently emphasized the importance of preparing his team to compete, and the rivalry provides another opportunity for Kansas to demonstrate its progress. While the Jayhawks have faced challenges against Kansas State in recent seasons, ending that streak would represent a significant accomplishment for the program.
According to the Kansas Athletics football schedule, the Sunflower Showdown is one of the defining matchups on Kansas’ schedule each season. The game brings additional attention to both programs and provides an opportunity for players to establish themselves in one of college football’s most recognizable in-state rivalries.
For Leipold, the challenge is making sure his players understand the significance of the game without allowing the emotions surrounding the rivalry to affect their preparation. Kansas must execute its assignments, limit mistakes and remain disciplined against a Kansas State team that will be eager to defend its home field.
The Jayhawks also have an opportunity to build momentum by carrying lessons from previous games into the rivalry matchup. Consistency on offense, improved defensive execution and avoiding costly penalties will be important factors if Kansas hopes to compete for four quarters.
