Shauna Green gives impeccable insight on non-compete clause with Illinois basketball

Shauna Green is here to stay with the women’s Illinois basketball program, and she is practicing what she preaches with her recent contract extension.

Green, entering her fifth year with Illinois, agreed to a contract extension on September 10 that could keep her inked to the program through 2036. This deal comes after four seasons of great success, in which Green recorded the second-most wins in program history.

The news of Green’s extension sent excitement across Champaign, but it was the non-compete clause in her deal that became a major talking point during this year’s Big Ten Media Days.

The non-compete clause states that Green cannot leave for any college or WNBA job, locking her in as Illinois’ head coach for the foreseeable future. She has completely bought into this program and wants to continue building it into something special.

Shauna Green’s contract extension is a meaningful moment in Illinois basketball history

It is difficult to find consistency within college sports, especially with how prevalent the transfer portal has become. The Illini, however, have been very fortunate with their retention, after returning 90% of their roster from the 2025-26 season.

Green has done a fantastic job creating a culture that players want to be a part of. Whether it’s the coaching, the facilities, or even the school itself, Green has turned Illinois into a place her players want to call home.

It is a special thing to see, and the fact that Green has gone so far as to sign a non-compete clause is icing on the cake. It perfectly symbolizes how bought into the program she is, and she hopes this dedication rubs off on her players.

It is not every day a school finds a coach like Green, who is having fun where she’s coaching and who is determined to turn a program like Illinois’ around. The future is bright for Illinois, and Green is about to take them to new heights.
