North Carolina urges legislators to avoid conference realignment restrictions in Protect College Sports Act

The University of North Carolina issued a statement about the Protect College Sports Act on Friday, urging legislators to exclude an amendment that would limit conference realignment with a number of restrictions.

“UNC strongly supports the Protect College Sports Act and we have been consistent from the start that it is critical to the future and stability of college athletics.” the statement reads.

“Supporting the bill and seeking to improve it are not in conflict. The Senate version was strengthened through many modifications, and our request for one targeted amendment is part of that same process.

“Congress can protect college sports without litigating conference composition, and we look forward to working with the House to get this legislation enacted.”

Previously, the issue of conference realignment caught the attention of politicians involved, leading to an expansion provision which looked place a cap on how many members each conference can include, along with a three-year probationary period where the school must operate as an independent.

The Protect College Sports Act has now passed through the Senate with approval, but must navigate the House before a deadline to avoid restarting the process. Whether it will pass in time, or receive enough support, remains in question with midterm elections set for November.

Saving College Sports calls out ACC programs, including UNC

The UNC statement comes shortly after Saving College Sports, led by Texas Tech booster and proponent for congressional intervention Cody Campbell, released its own statement warning that a group of schools could attempt to intervene with the bill.

In a post, they suggest that Clemson, Florida State, Miami and North Carolina have hoped of “sunsetting the entire provision so that they have the right to immediately bolt from the ACC.” It also mentions a desire to raise the cap on conference membership from 20 to 22,…
