Mick Cronin congratulates Oregon’s Dana Altman on his retirement

Ahead of the 2o26-2027 season, Oregon Ducks men’s basketball coach Dana Altman announced his retirement effective immediately. Altman has served as Oregon’s head coach since 2010, becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach.

Altman has been a conference rival for the UCLA Bruins for more than a decade and a half, posting a career record of 15-17 versus UCLA since taking over for the Ducks. The most iconic meeting was in 2017 where No. 10 UCLA knocked off No. 5 Oregon thanks to a game-winning three by Lonzo Ball to beat a Duck team that was headlined by Dillon Brooks, Jordan Bell and Peyton Pritchard.

UCLA head coach Mick Cronin wasn’t with the team for the 2017 win but he did make a post on Twitter Wednesday night, appreciating Altman for his time as conference rivals.

“I’ll miss seeing Dana on the road, talking basketball with him, and getting his calls of encouragement. When I arrived at UCLA, my biggest challenge in conference play was going against his Oregon teams,” Cronin said. “He is a great coach and a class act. Congratulations on a great career!”

Former DePaul head coach Tony Stubblefield will take over as Oregon’s interim head coach, looking to lead a Ducks team that went 12-20 last year and finished in 15th place of the Big Ten Conference.

UCLA will get their first look of Oregon without Altman on December 1st, when the Ducks visit Pauley Pavilion for some Big Ten action. The Bruins will then head to Eugene on March 3rd, to face Oregon in the second-to-last game of the regular season.
