Draymond Green shares humbling perspective on changing role in Warriors’ offense

Draymond Green enters his 15th season with the Warriors, serving as one of the main facilitators of the offense for most of those years.

The new season will shake up that status quo as Steve Kerr institutes a 5-out offensive system. Much of the play-making responsibility, particularly beyond the three-point line, will shift away from Green, with Kerr hoping to jumpstart the four-time All Star’s 3-point shotmaking.

Green was asked if he could feel the difference in the Warriors’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Clippers, and whether he liked it or not.

“Yeah, I definitely feel it,” Green told reporters Sunday after the 104-101 preseason loss. “Whether I like it or not, it’s going to happen. So, I don’t want to get off into it — whether I like it or dislike it. It is what it is.”

The statement signals an acceptance of the change. He avoided saying whether or not he likes it, but Green humbly displayed some buy-in to the new look.

Green also was asked how much of an adjustment the new offensive look creates for him, personally.

“It’s a big adjustment. You know, after playing a certain way for so long,” Green explained. “It’s a big adjustment, but I’ll figure it out.”

Steph Curry and Green averaged the most and second-most turnovers, respectively, on the team last season. It’s not a surprising statistic given the fact that Kerr has allowed the duo to control the flow of the offense and has encouraged aggressive passing and movement.

But the Warriors averaged 15.7 total turnovers per game last season, tied for third-most in the NBA. It’s part of what prompted Kerr to alter the overall strategy.

There will surely be some growing pains, but Green is confident that the team will make the adjustment.

“We’re getting in better shape,” Green said of the first week of training camp. “Learning a new offense. Kind of sped up. But, you know, it’ll come together eventually, but it’s going to take a little time.”

If there’s any certainty…
