Open Thread: Tobias Harris trained with George Gervin

Tobias Harris joining the Spurs seems like a perfect summer acquisition, and it just got better.

Tobias Harris described his bond with George Gervin:

“When I was young, I used to come to San Antonio to train with George Gervin. He and my father (Torrel Harris, an NBA agent) are very close. George is practically like an uncle to me.

So, when I signed here, he was one of the first people I called. I told him, ‘I’m coming to San Antonio.’

He’s my guy. I’ve been in touch with him since I was really young—probably since I was 5 or 6. I used to come here to train with him at his academy.

I’d say he’s probably my only real connection to San Antonio, but now, I’m looking forward to my family and me becoming part of the community.”

Torrel Harris started Unique Sports Management, now Unique Sports Management International (USMI) in 1988. Tobias grew up around the game and was drafted nineteenth overall in 2011.

Looks like San Antonio may be an excellent fit on multiple levels.
