Wake Forest Basketball Loses Scrimmage to Georgetown 94-77

We got our first look at the 2026-27 Wake Forest Basketball team this afternoon in a scrimmage against Georgetown, and unless Georgetown ends up being an NCAA contender, there is definitely a lot of work to do between now and November.

While this was an October 4th scrimmage a full month before the season begins, there were a lot of concerning red flags in the scrimmage that nothing has really changed between last year’s and this year’s teams. The Deacs once again got outrebounded 38-25 and gave up 17 second chance points; they failed to defend the 3-point line, allowing the Hoyas to shoot 16-29 from beyond the arc (55%); and they didn’t shoot the ball well at all, hitting on just 45% of their field goals, 24% of their 3-pointers, and 61% of their free throws. Despite Wake forcing 22 turnovers and turning them into 33 points, the Deacs were basically never in this game and trailed by as much as 25 with 5 minutes remaining. It kind of looked like the exact same team as last year, just without a Juke Harris caliber player to score when nothing else was working.

There were a few positives from the scrimmage. Both of the Placide twins played very well for their first collegiate game action. Gavin finished with 14 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor, while Gallagher had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Jamari McDowell also looks like a very solid addition—the Kansas transfer finished with 8 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds in 18 minutes. McDowell and Slovenian guard Lukas Bojovic were the only players with a positive +/- at +10 and 0 respectively.

It was just a scrimmage, and we really have no idea how good Georgetown will end up being this season, so don’t put too much stock into a meaningless game in October. The Hoyas were picked to be 10th the Big East this season, but, as we have seen many times, preseason polls are essentially meaningless.

The Deacs have 1 more scrimmage on October 15th against South Carolina, so hopefully they will show some improvement…
