Melvin Council Jr. confused the college basketball world on Saturday night when he took to Instagram to post a few schools he will be choosing to play college basketball at next season. The list included Kentucky, LSU, and Michigan.
But on Sunday, Council instead announced he was returning to the Kansas Jayhawks. He’s another 5-for-5 guy who got a preliminary injunction against the NCAA from a New York judge on Tuesday, giving him another year of eligibility.

Council will now head back to Kansas, where he won Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season after transferring from St. Bonaventure. As a Jayhawk last season, he started in all 35 games, averaging 12.7 points per game, shooting 39.2% from the field and 30.8% from 3-point range, and adding five rebounds and five assists per contest. He spent time at Wagner College and Monroe College before Kansas, where he was immensely successful.
Mark Pope said at Media Day that this group was the roster he was “expecting to go to battle with”, so it would’ve been odd to throw another name in the mix after Big Blue Madness had already passed. Council also plays point guard, and Pope already has two starting point guards on the roster in Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, as well as Mason Williams and Jerone Morton coming off the bench.
I’m sure it was a way for Council to feel like the dude for a moment, but the schools he mentioned eventually shut down any buzz, with media reporting that those schools aren’t even recruiting him.
We’ll see if he actually ends up eligible, but if he can suit up for the Jayhawks, he’ll face Kentucky in Chicago a little over a month from now.
