Fantasy Basketball Points League Draft Strategy
One of the most noteworthy differences between points leagues and category leagues is that we don’t have to concern ourselves with a player’s shooting percentage or free-throw percentage. In a points league, players receive an assigned fantasy point value for every statistic that they record. For example, Yahoo standard points leagues will give a player 1.0 fantasy points for every actual point they score in a game, 1.2 points per rebound, 1.5 points per assist, 3.0 points per steal and 3.0 points per block, and -1 point per turnover.
In a category league, players with efficiency issues can be a significant negative. An example of a player who holds more value in points leagues than category leagues is Giannis Antetokounmpo. His counting stats are usually excellent, considering his career averages of 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. Prior to his injury-plagued 2025-26 campaign, he had averaged at least 28.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists in each of the previous six campaigns.

The downside with Giannis in category leagues is that he struggles at the free-throw line. He only made 65.0% of his free-throw attempts last season and has shot lower than 66.0% from the charity stripe in each of the last four seasons.
