“Another Underwhelming Choice”: Fans Raise Doubts Over Mark Pope’s Key Backroom Addition Ahead of Kentucky’s Season Start

Mark Pope has been keen to expand his Kentucky team, but his latest backroom addition hasn’t gone down well with Wildcats fans.

Former Wildcat John Pelphrey has joined the Kentucky staff as Director of Player Development. Pelphrey most recently coached at Tennessee Tech, posting a 79-138 record between 2019 and 2026. He will begin his new job in Lexington next week.

John Pelphrey Spoke About His Recent Experience in Kentucky

When John Pelphrey brought Tennessee Tech to Kentucky in 2025, his team was beaten 104-54, but he still felt it was a special experience. After the game, he joined Mark Pope on his radio show.

“The thing that makes this place special is you,” he said. “When we first got here, it was great. The Roman Empire fell, and the enemies were at the gate wanting to come in, and they thought they were going to get us, talking about how they were going to beat us twice and sweep Kentucky. ‘This is the time to do it.’ It didn’t happen.”

“Yes, we had C.M. Newton. Yes, we had Rick Pitino. Thank goodness Jamal Mashburn showed up, but you people showed up for three straight years early, loud and continuous. It was amazing.”

Kentucky, meanwhile, is still looking to add another assistant coach to its mix.
