WEST LAFAYETTE — The Purdue basketball stacked it up to end Thursday’s practice, then erupted in celebration.
Enzo Shahrvin’s eligibility was cleared by the NCAA. He is eligible to play a single season for the Boilermakers under the new age-based eligibility model.

After coach Matt Painter made the announcement, Shahrvin’s teammates mobbed him as if he’d made a buzzer-beating game-winner. In some ways, he did. Some other foreign players waiting for an eligibility answer have returned to their professional teams.
As Painter sat for a post-practice interview, Shahrvin came up from behind to give his coach a big hug and thank him for the work he had put in on his case.
Purdue had been waiting since the spring for clearance on the French forward’s eligibility. The NCAA announced in May it would begin taking a stricter stance in recent months against athletes whose professional earnings exceeded the NCAA’s standard of “actual and necessary expenses.”
At the time, that scrutiny was expected to most directly address American players who attempted to return to college after going through the NBA draft process and sometimes playing in NBA G League games or spending time on NBA rosters. However, it has also extended to older foreign professionals attempting to play in college, where revenue share and name, image and likeness income are now available.

Shahrvin has been practicing with Purdue since his arrival. He accompanied the team in its trip to Canada but did not play in the exhibition games.
