Marquette picked to finish fourth in Big East coaches poll

The Big East coaches think the Marquette men’s basketball team will have a bounce-back season.

The Golden Eagles were predicted to finish fourth in the 11-team league in the annual preseason poll released Oct. 1.

MU also received one first-place vote after finishing 7-13 last season and tied for seventh. Coaches can’t vote for their own teams. Connecticut was the clear favorite to finish atop the standings, getting eight first-place votes.

St. John’s was predicted to finish second and was the only team other than MU to earn first-place votes with two.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, MU sophomore point guard Nigel James Jr. was a unanimous all-Big East first-team pick.

The 6-foot James was the Big East freshman of the year last season, averaging 16.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

MU sophomore forward Royce Parham was picked to the all-Big East second team. He looks to capitalize on the momentum from the second half of last season when he averaged 16.4 points per game in MU’s final seven games.

MU newcomer Sananda Fru, a transfer from Louisville, was voted to the all-Big East third team. He averaged 9.0 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Cardinals last season.

Connecticut swept the preseason individual awards, with Silas Demary Jr. picked as player of the year and Colben Landrew voted as freshman of the year.
