Kentucky Basketball posts opening for assistant coach position

We’re just days removed from Kentucky Basketball Media Day, where Mark Pope was asked numerous things, one of them being the potential to add another coach to the staff with an assistant role still open.

On Monday, Pope’s answer was, “Technically, there’s no exact right number on our staff. I like our staff so much right now. There’s a real synergy with what we’re doing…right now, this is actually by far the best I’ve felt with how our staff is functioning together. Mo (Williams) has been an incredible addition, and Keegan (Brown) has been a really tremendous addition.”

Well, on Thursday morning, there is now a new job opening for an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky.

A couple of spots on Pope’s staff opened up this offseason after the departure of Jason Hart and Alvin Brooks III. Mo Williams was hired and quickly filled one role, but the other was never filled. Keegan Brown was brought in, but in a Director of Roster Management role, not a coaching role.

Through the offseason, there was a laundry list of potential names to fill the spot, headlined by Jamal Crawford. A long, back-and-forth with him that resulted in him turning it down after much thought and consideration.

At this point, opening that job up the day before Big Blue Madness seems like odd timing, but there’s potential that the name to fill the role could be someone who’s already in the building: Nick Robinson.

Robinson has been with Pope at Kentucky for both of his first two years in a Director of Basketball Operations role, but has stepped into an interim role in recruiting and on the court.

Who else could Kentucky target, though? Obviously, with Kentucky, you have alumni with incredible basketball minds for days, so maybe you target one of those names, whether they’re in coaching or not.
