Former Knicks star J.R. Smith arrested on family assault charge

J.R. Smith was arrested on a charge of family violence on Monday in Texas, according to Hunt County jail records.

Smith, two-time NBA champion guard with the Cavaliers and Lakers, was arrested on one charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence.

He remains in the Hunt County Detention Center, per TMZ, and jail records show no bond has been set.

Smith was arrested while pulled over for a traffic stop in Texas — during which police checked his license plate and discovered Earl Joseph Smith III (his real name) had an active warrant out of the Southlake Police Department for a charge of family violence assault causing bodily injury, Royse City Police Department said in a statement to The Post.

Police confirmed the warrant and Smith was taken into custody and as transported to the Hunt County Detention Center.

Smith’s brother was with him at the time of the arrest and the vehicle was released to him.

The polie statement did not include his brother’s name.

Smith, who played 16 seasons in the NBA, was named the Sixth Man of the Year with the Knicks in 2013, and won his first championship with the Cavaliers alongside LeBron James in the 2015-16 season.

Game 3 of that Finals between the Lakers and Heat on Oct. 4, 2020 was the last time Smith played in an NBA game.

He has yet to formally announce his NBA retirement.

Smith — who went straight from high school the pros — graduated in May with a Liberal Arts degree from North Carolina A&T, where he was a walk-on for the men’s golf team.

He recently played in amateur golf tournaments.
