North Carolina A&T pulled off a phenomenal victory over a ranked FCS opponent, Rhode Island, on Saturday. The Aggies were able to withstand Rhode Island’s comeback attempt and won 22-18 in a historic victory, as it was the first ranked FCS win that North Carolina A&T has secured in its history.
North Carolina A&T head coach Shawn Gibbs gave his thoughts on the win in post-game comments posted by the athletics department.

“I don’t know if it was the music or if they’re finally buying into just being tired of it. It ain’t so much that you can take. You try not to listen to all the noise, but you hear people talking, and people are sending you stuff. You get tired of it, and you know what we’re capable of doing. We, as a coaching staff, were finally able to convince the guys that this is what it takes to win it, and they trusted the process. That’s why we’re able to win.”
Heading into the game, North Carolina A&T was 0-4 after a blowout loss to fellow CAA opponent Campbell University. But the Aggies built a 15-3 lead by halftime. That helped them control the flow early and ultimately secure the victory. With the win, North Carolina A&T joined other unranked FCS opponents that beat top-25 FCS teams.

Northern Iowa upset No. 3 Illinois State, Cornell took down No. 17 Yale and Colgate topped No. 23 Villanova. Rhode Island, meanwhile, entered its matchup ranked No. 19. Now North Carolina A&T looks to turn their ranked win into winning momentum as they face off against Bryant University on Saturday.
